How To Make Your Home Feel Like Autumn: 7 Simple Seasonal Switches

Seven simple seasonal switches to make your home feel warmer, cosier and beautifully autumnal, from flowers and foliage to candlelight and styling.

As a florist, this is one of my favourite times of year for bringing the outside in. The colours deepen, the foliage gets more interesting, berries and grasses start making an appearance and flowers take on a completely different mood.

And, just as we naturally start reaching for an extra layer and something involving cinnamon… it’s often the time we start wanting our homes to feel a little different too.

But this doesn’t mean completely redecorating the living room, covering every available surface in pumpkins or undergoing a full seasonal personality change!

Sometimes a few small switches are enough to make home feel warmer, cosier and much more in season.

So, if you’re ready to lean into Autumn, here are seven easy ways to make your home embrace the ‘ber’ months.

1. Bring the changing season indoors with flowers and foliage

I might be slightly biased here, but few things change the feel of a room as quickly as fresh flowers.

The trick for autumn is to think beyond flowers alone.

This is the season when foliage really starts earning its place in an arrangement. Interesting leaves, berries, seed heads, grasses and branches bring texture and movement and instantly make a display feel more seasonal.

You don’t need a huge arrangement either. A few stems of towering gladioli or autumn foliage in a tall vase can look beautiful on a kitchen island or hallway table, while a little seasonal posy is enough to give a bedside table, desk or cosy corner an autumn update.

My top tip? Let things be a little wild.

Autumn arrangements don’t need to feel perfectly neat or symmetrical. A branch leaning slightly to one side or grasses dancing above the flowers are often the things that give an arrangement its character.

If arranging isn’t your thing, of course, that’s exactly what we're here for. Our autumn bouquets and vase arrangements are hand crafted in our Didsbury flower shop using the best seasonal flowers and foliage available.

2. Swap summer brights for warmer, richer colours

Autumn colour doesn’t have to mean orange.

There’s a whole gorgeous palette to play with at this time of year: berry, plum, rust, chocolate, wine, burnt pink, ochre, mossy greens and warm golden shades.

Think less pumpkin patch, more rich, moody and a little bit spicy.

One of the easiest ways to change the mood of a room is to introduce these deeper colours in small doses.

It could be flowers on the coffee table, a berry-coloured cushion, a warm throw over the arm of the sofa or simply swapping a bright summer vase for something darker or more textured.

And you don’t necessarily have to match everything.

In fact, some of our favourite autumn flower combinations come from mixing unexpected shades together - warm apricot with plum, dusky pink with rust or fresh greens against deep berry tones.

Look outside for inspiration. Nature is very good at colour palettes.

3. Add candlelight and scent

If summer belongs to throwing open the doors, autumn belongs to lamps and candlelight.

There is probably no quicker way to make a room feel cosy than turning off the big light and lighting a candle.

Scent can help signal the change of season too. Woody, spiced and warmer fragrances suddenly feel right again after months of fresh, summery scents.

Our Autumn Affection Gift Set, for example, brings together autumn flowers with a pumpkin-spiced candle, which is pretty much the floral equivalent of putting your favourite jumper back on.

But you can create the same feeling with whatever you already have at home.

Cluster a couple of candles on a tray, place one next to a little vase of flowers or add candlelight to your dining table.

Just one important note: try not to put your flowers right next to the flame or another direct source of heat. Flowers enjoy cosy autumn evenings considerably less than we do.

4. Give the dining table an autumn update

You don’t need to be hosting a six-course dinner party to make the dining table look lovely.

In fact, we're big believers in making it look good on an ordinary Tuesday.

Start with what you have. A runner or tablecloth. A couple of candles. Your everyday crockery. Then add something seasonal down the middle.

Think about height if people are actually going to sit around the table. Nobody wants to spend dinner peering through a hydrangea to talk to the person opposite.

A few little bud vases dotted along the table work brilliantly. Then add some seasonal extras: apples, pears, figs, a collection of gourds, conkers or interesting foliage can all work beautifully.

5. Create one little ‘autumn moment’

You do not need to autumn-ify the entire house.

Instead, choose one spot. Maybe it’s the console table you see as you walk through the door. The corner of the kitchen where you make your morning coffee. A bedside table. The mantelpiece. A shelf in the living room.

Then create one small seasonal moment there.

It could be as simple as some seasonal blooms next to a candle, your favourite book and a blanket. Grouping a few things together has much more impact than scattering bits of seasonal decor everywhere.

Our Autumn Styling set is perfect for exactly this sort of thing: beautiful foliage, a seasonal candle and mini pumpkins – all in one gorgeous gift set.

6. Borrow your decorations from nature

Next time you're out walking, look at what's around you: interesting branches, fallen leaves, seed heads, conkers and pinecones can all add texture to a seasonal display.

A bowl piled with pears, apples or figs brings instant colour to a kitchen table, while berries, grasses and branches mixed amongst flowers give arrangements that wonderfully abundant, just-gathered autumn feel.

But make sure to keep your fruit bowl and vase slightly apart. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which can make reduce the life span of your cut flowers.

And, one further word of caution from your friendly neighbourhood florist: be sensible about what you bring home and where you pick it from. Remember that some berries and plants can be harmful to children or pets.

7. Buy yourself the flowers

Not every bunch of flowers needs an occasion. They don't always need to say happy birthday, congratulations, thank you or I love you.

Sometimes they can simply say: It's autumn. I fancied them.

The view from your favourite spot in the house is even more glorious when it changes with the seasons. That’s really what seasonal decorating should be about. Not buying a whole new house-worth of things four times a year but noticing the season you're actually in and bringing a little bit of it home with you.

So light the candle. Find the good vase. Put something delicious in the oven. Invite your favourite people round…or absolutely don't.
