Peonies have a bit of a moment every spring…
They’re the flowers you suddenly start noticing everywhere - Instagram, Tik Tok, casually styled in vases that look effortless but perfect. Big, blousy, romantic, and just a little bit addictive.
But if you’ve ever actually tried to buy them, you’ll know it’s not always quite so straightforward.
They’re seasonal. They don’t always look like the photos when you first get them home. And depending on where you buy them, the quality can vary a lot.

Here at The Flower Lounge in Didsbury we help customers find their perfect peonies every Spring - the ones that open beautifully, last well, and feel worth every penny.
So, if you’ve got a bit of peony FOMO and want to get it right - you’re in the right place.
Here are 8 things to know before buying peonies so you can choose the freshest blooms and get the best value from your local florist.
1. What actually are peonies (and why does everyone love them so much)?
Peonies are one of those flowers that feel instantly luxurious.
They start as neat little buds and then open into these big, ruffled, cloud-like blooms that completely transform over a few days. It’s that “watching them open on your living room table” moment that people fall in love with.

2. When are peonies in season in the UK?
Peony season in the UK is short - usually late April to June - and that’s when they’re at their absolute best.
Outside of that window, you can find them, but they’ll likely be imported, more expensive, and sometimes a bit hit and miss. During peak season they’re fresher, fuller, and far better value.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign… this is it.
3. How do I know if I’m buying good peonies?
Not all peonies are created equal that’s for sure. What you’ll find in your independent florist shop will be very different to what you’ll find bunched up in a supermarket.
What you’re looking for are buds that feel soft (think marshmallow, not marble), with fresh green stems and no browning on the petals.
Too tight, and they may never open properly. Too open, and they won’t last long.
This is where a good florist really matters - we’re choosing them at exactly the right stage and conditioning them carefully, so they open beautifully for you at home.
So if they look a bit understated when they arrive… give them a moment. They’re about to do their thing.

4. How long will they actually last?
Realistically, around 5–7 days - sometimes longer if they’re looked after well.
Treat them right, and they’ll reward you:
- Give the stems a fresh trim before they go in water (& use our flower food)
- Use a clean vase (it matters more than you think)
- Strip any leaves below the water line
- Keep them somewhere cool, away from direct sun
- Change the water every couple of days
It’s low effort, high reward!
5. What colours should I go for (and are there different types of peonies)?
This is where peonies really come into their own.
Most people picture soft blush pinks, but there’s actually a whole spectrum to choose from. From crisp whites and creamy ivories, through delicate blush and ballet pinks, right up to deeper raspberry tones and richer, more vibrant pinks.
And then there are the varieties.
You might hear names like Sarah Bernhardt (the classic soft pink, full and romantic), Duchesse de Nemours (a beautiful creamy white with a soft fragrance), or Coral Charm (a slightly more modern choice that opens from a warm coral into softer peachy tones)
Each one opens slightly differently, sits differently in a vase, and gives a slightly different feel - which is why working with what’s looking best that week is always the way to go.
If you’re buying for your home, think about the space and the mood you want to create.
If you’re gifting, think about the person.
Or honestly? Just go with the ones you can’t stop looking at.

6. Are peonies a good gift (and do they mean anything)?
Peonies aren’t just beautiful - they carry meaning too.
They’re often associated with love, romance, prosperity, and good fortune, which is why they’re such a popular choice for birthdays, anniversaries, and thoughtful gestures.
There’s something quite generous about them. They don’t feel minimal or understated - they feel full, abundant, and considered.
Which makes them perfect for those moments where you want to send something that feels a little bit special!
7. Do peonies work for weddings?
It’s probably no surprise that Peonies are one of the most requested wedding flowers.
They add instant softness, texture, and that effortless “just gathered” look that works beautifully in both classic and more modern settings.
Think...
- Peonies in full bloom in bridal bouquets
- Tables centres bursting with peonies
- Archways and door frames spilling over with peonies
- Statement pedestals with voluminous peonies
You get the idea...

That said, peonies do come with a little bit of unpredictability.
They can go from tight bud to fully open quite quickly, especially in warmer conditions - which is why they need careful handling and timing.
With an experienced florist, this is all taken care of behind the scenes. We’re selecting them at the right stage, conditioning them properly, and managing their environment so they’re looking their absolute best on the day.
So yes - they’re a little bit high-maintenance (but if you can’t have a little high maintenance at your wedding, when can you?)
